Digital Cinema

Arts Alliance Media is Europe’s largest digital cinema services provider, with seamless end-to-end digital cinema solutions encompassing equipment selections and integration, operator training, installations and support, and content management and delivery.

In February 2005, Arts Alliance Digital Cinema was selected to rollout the UK Film Council’s Digital Screen Network (DSN), a $20m contract to install and operate Europe’s largest 2k digital cinema network.

AADC is responsible for financing the rollout, installing and maintaining the equipment, and training operators. AADC also offers distributors that use the circuit special rates for content management and duplication services.

Phase 1 (50 screens) was completed in February 2006, and by Spring 2007, 240 screens will be installed and operating. All of the screens in the DSN are JPEG2000 compatible. To date, over 60 titles, and 12,250 digital shows have played on the network.

In April 2006, AAM expanded its operations into Europe, beginning with a digital cinema circuit in Norway.

Benefits of Digital Cinema

For distributors:

• Flexibility: with each cinema having its own copy, it’s easy to avoid the problems caused by holdover logistics. Successful films can be expanded, and smaller films can be played on split screens.
• Cost savings: considerably lower print costs allow distributors to release more widely and/or reduce overall spend on prints.

For exhibitors

• Meeting audience demand: cheaper print duplication means schedules can be altered in response to audience demand and a greater variety of films can be shown.
• Alternative content: ability to show sporting events, concerts, etc.

For audiences

• Consistent quality: 35mm prints scratch and deteriorate with each screening, whereas digital projection ensures the audience see a pristine copy of the film every time.
• Screening runs can be extended for popular films, meaning audiences get to see more of what they want.
